With £10,000 to spend, you can take your pick of some of the best quality and most popular used vans around. Here are five of our favourites …
Citroen Berlingo
The Berlingo entered its third generation in 2018 – which means you can expect some really good deals on previous-generation models that are only two or three years old. Efficient engines, excellent reliability and low maintenance costs make it affordable to run, and technology and safety equipment are generous. Large for a compact van, car-like to drive and very practical, it’s available in two lengths; there’s also a seven-seater Berlingo Multispace MPV, which Tom Wiltshire, writing for The Van Expert, called “one of the most practical vehicles on the market in terms of passenger space on a small platform.”
Peugeot Partner
The Partner and the Berlingo are twins, and together have won numerous awards, including International Van of the Year 2019 and What Van?’s light commercial vehicle of the year 2019. Auto Express said of the Partner: “It takes the small van class to another level.”Capable and versatile, it comes in two lengths, with even the smaller version able to accommodate two euro pallets and the long version able to carry a payload of just over 1,000kg. On the road, it’s fun, engaging, smooth and responsive.
Volkswagen Caddy
Honest John described the popular Caddy as “rising above the rest when it comes to quality and refinement.” A fun, smart and comfortable small van, it’s also highly economical, with the 101bhp BlueMotion Euro 6 2.0-litre diesel delivering up to 64.2mpg. The Caddy is available in standard or Maxi length – the latter can carry a load of up to 4.2 cubic metres and has twin sliding doors as standard. There’s also a Caddy Life passenger-carrying version with five or seven seats.
Ford Transit Custom
Wiltshire called the Transit Custom “brilliant” and “fantastic to drive – perhaps the best-driving mid-sized van out there.” The UK's bestselling van since 2014, the Custom has a generous load bay – “superbly square and practical”, Wiltshire said – which can carry a payload of up to 8.3 cubic metres or 1,530kg. Myriad configurations are available – there are two lengths, two heights, and versions to seat between two and nine people. The 2.0-litre Euro 6 EcoBlue diesel engine delivers up to 168bhp and 299lb ft of torque.
Ford Transit Connect
Smaller than the Custom, the Focus-derived Connect looks great, drives beautifully and is a fantastic all-rounder. Capable and durable, it was the UK’s seventh bestselling van in 2019 at the time of writing. Available in a variety of configurations, it can carry a payload of up to 3.6 cubic metres, with even the shorter version able to carry two euro pallets; the low load height makes getting cargo in and out easy too. Equipment is generous, the engines are smooth and the cabin is comfortable, spacious and packed with storage.
