With a huge payload capacity, generous technology and safety features, and an excellent reputation for reliability and quality, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is one of the best large vans around. Popular since its European launch in 1995, it has won numerous awards, including fleet van of the year eight times at the Motor Transport Awards and best heavy van in the Business Van Awards 2019.
Flexible, practical, efficient and functional, the Sprinter panel van can carry an enormous payload of 2,547kg or 15.5 cubic metres in a load bay up to 4.8m long and 1.7m wide. If that is somehow insufficient, it can also transport up to 300kg of items on the roof, and tow up to 3,500kg. It's available in various lengths and heights, and you can choose from front wheel drive (more load space and capacity, a lower load sill, better fuel economy), rear wheel drive (more towing capacity, better handling) or four wheel drive. The huge load bay is just crying out for conversions, hence the Sprinter is also available as a tipper truck, Luton and Luton tail-lift van, refrigerated van, dropside, and passenger-carrying vehicle.
Yet the Sprinter majors on comfort too, and despite its size, is very easy to drive. There's a choice of two strong diesel engines, a 2.2-litre V4 and a 190bhp 3.0-litre V6, with fuel economy getting up to 40.4mpg.
All Sprinters come with air conditioning, a 360-degree parking camera, Bluetooth and cruise control, plus an alarm, double locking and a visible vehicle identification number for security. Standard safety features include ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability control and a driver's airbag.
The third generation Sprinter arrived in 2018, which should mean even better deals on vans from before then. We get plenty of used Mercedes-Benz Sprinters in stock, almost all of them less than five years old, in a variety of body styles.
