Did you know that if you have a high-polluting van that’s expensive to drive into London’s ultra-low emissions zone, you can get a grant to help you swap it for a new one?
London Mayor Sadiq Khan set up the £23 million scrappage scheme in February to help small businesses, sole traders and charities replace up to three vans or minibuses with newer, cleaner ones.
You can claim £3,500 to scrap a non-Euro 6 van or minibus and buy or lease a Euro 6 replacement instead – and this goes up to £6,000 if you want to buy or lease an electric van or minibus.
Plus, you’ll be eligible for a refund of ultra-low emissions zone charges for three months after you apply to the scheme.
The London ultra-low emissions zone was created in April 2019 to improve the city’s air quality by dissuading people from driving heavily polluting vehicles into the centre of the capital.
Anyone driving a vehicle into the zone which doesn’t meet Euro 6 standards if it’s a diesel, or Euro 4 standards if it’s a petrol, has to pay: £12.50 a day for cars and vans, and £100 a day for heavy goods vehicles.
This affects most diesel vans from before 2016, though only petrol vans from before 2006. Electric vans are exempt. The charge applies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and there’s an £80 fine for not paying it. TfL also plans to expand the zone in 2021 to cover most of the area within the North and South Circular roads.
You’ll need either for your business to be registered at an address in Greater London, or to drive the vehicle in question into the congestion charge zone frequently (defined as 52 times in the six months before the start of the scheme). You also need to have owned the vehicle since February 22, 2018 or before.
Your business must have 10 or fewer employees, and have had either a turnover of no more than £632,000, or a balance sheet total of no more than £316,000, in both this and the previous financial year. Charities must be registered with the Charity Commission.
