Fiat builds robust, efficient and hard-working vans which combine spaciousness with style and versatility with value. The brand’s vehicles have won a clutch of awards in the past few years, including Honest John’s large van of the year award in 2018 for the Ducato.
Launched in 2001, and revamped in 2010, the Doblo Cargo is an appealing, highly practical small van. As a panel van, it’s available in two lengths and two heights, and can carry a load of up to 5 cubic metres, 1,005kg or 2.3m long. As well as 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre diesel engines delivering up to 118bhp and 236lb ft of torque, there’s also a 1.4-litre 94bhp petrol version. Choosing the Doblo Cargo as its light van of the year 2018 after testing it over thousands of miles, What Van? concluded: “Throughout it all it proved completely reliable and the preeminent contender in its class.”
Larger than the Doblo, the Ducato is a capable, comfortable, robust and powerful load-carrier which has remained popular throughout its 39 years, fulfilling roles as diverse as an ambulance and a motorhome. As a panel van, it’s available in four lengths and three heights, with a load-carrying capacity of up to 17 cubic metres or 2,200kg; you can also get it as a tipper truck, dropside, nine-seater combi, crew van and platform cab. Ducatos from 2014 onwards are powered by a strong 2.0-litre or 2.3-litre diesel engine, which is Euro 6 compliant and delivers up to175bhp. The the cabin, meanwhile, is comfortable, with ample storage and generous equipment.
In between the two sits the Talento, whose large load area, efficiency and car-like handling make it popular with builders and delivery drivers. Stylish, comfortable and versatile, it’s available as a panel van in two lengths and two heights, as well as a platform cab, and a crew van seating up to nine. The Talento can carry loads of up to 8.6 cubic metres, 1,264kg or 3.4m long – even the short-wheelbase version will carry three Euro pallets. On the road, it’s agile and capable, with smooth, light steering and a strong 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel engine.
