The functionality and urban mobility of the Peugeot Expert are hard to beat, with up to 6.6 cubic metres of load space – enough for three Euro pallets – and a payload of up to 1,500kg, plus towing capacity of up to 2,500kg. The Expert lives up to its name when it comes to shifting gear, coming in three load lengths, and available as a panel van, crew van or platform cab, as well as a nine-seater combi.
Look out for models which have the optional load-through bulkhead, which increases the load bay length to just over 4m in the long-wheelbase panel van. All models have twin sliding side doors for easy access, and six or eight load tie-down points to secure cargo.
Last revamped in 2016, the Peugeot Expert shares its basic design with the Citroen Dispatch and the Toyota Proace, a design which is in turn derived from the Peugeot 308 – and on the road, it does feel like a large family car.
There's a choice of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines with power outputs ranging from 94bhp to 178bhp, which deliver fuel economy of up to 55.4mpg. A tight turning circle of up to 12.4m makes parking easy, and power steering is standard across the range.
The interior feels solid and comfortable, with a practical, simple dashboard layout, a rubber floor and a high seating position that provides excellent visibility. The durable but supportive seats should prove comfortable on a long journey, especially as the driver's seat has plenty of height, rake, reach and lumbar adjustment. In three-seater models, the centre seat folds down to become a table, and there is plenty of storage, including a compartment under the middle seat to hide valuables, cup holders and an upper shelf in the door.
There are three trim levels – S, Professional and Professional Plus – and cruise control with a speed limiter, a DAB radio with Bluetooth, and a spare wheel is standard across the range. The standard safety kit is good too and includes hill start assist, which prevents the van from rolling backwards during a hill start, rear fog lights, driver and passenger airbags, and ABS with electronic stability control and emergency braking assistance.
