Introduced in 2014 and revamped in 2018, the Transit Courier is based on the Ford Fiesta and B-Max and is nimble, agile, sturdily built – and more than able to carry a plentiful array of tools, cargo and equipment.
The Courier can transport a payload of up to 2.3 cubic metres or 600kg, with plenty of room for a euro pallet in its 1.6m-long load bay. There are tie-down points to keep cargo secure, and all panel vans come with a full bulkhead, plus a light in the cargo bay to make loading and unloading after dark easier.
Some models have a load-through hatch in the bulkhead for carrying long, thin items like ladders and pipes. There’s also a spacious and versatile Kombi version which seats up to five, still with a cubic metre of load space in the back, increasing to 1.9 cubic metres with the back seats folded.
The Transit Courier is enjoyable to drive and its small size means it’s fantastically manoeuvrable, with a turning circle of just 10.5 metres. Gear changes are smooth and quick with the standard six-speed box and power steering comes as standard. There’s a choice of either a three-cylinder, 12-valve 1.0-litre turbopetrol engine delivering 99bhp and 125lb ft of torque, or a four-cylinder, eight-valve 1.5-litre turbodiesel with either 73bhp or 99bhp, the latter delivering 159lb ft of torque. Both diesels return fuel consumption of up to 65.7mpg.
Cabin storage includes cup holders and an A4 document holder in the centre console, a drawer under the passenger seat and an overhead shelf on Trend models, and an illuminated glovebox on Sport trim. Standard safety features include electronic stability control with ABS and traction control – also standard across the range, including on the Kombi, is a DAB radio with USB and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and a smartphone dock so you can play your music, plus a 12-volt socket to keep your phone charged.
Trend trim adds electric front windows, while Limited trim gets cruise control – operated by steering-wheel-mounted controls so you don’t have to take your hands off the wheel – which makes motorway driving more relaxing. It can also help you save on fuel, thanks to the speed limiter.
