10: Ford Ranger: 523 sold

Consistently the UK’s bestselling pickup, the Ford Ranger is good-looking, durable, reliable, and powerful, with a high payload capacity and the ability to tow up to 3.5 tonnes. Ford plans an update this year, with a range of new 2.0-litre EcoBlue engines and a new high-performance 210bhp Raptor model.

9: Peugeot Expert: 534 sold

The Expert is built on the same platform as the Citroen Dispatch and Toyota Proace, and the trio won What Van?’s medium van of the year award in 2018. Load-carrying ability, towing capacity, and fuel economy are all first-class.

8: Volkswagen Transporter: 553 sold

Spacious and versatile, with up to 9.3 cubic metres of load space and a comfortable, practical cabin, the Transporter is one of the best medium panel vans around. Volkswagen has just revealed a heavily revised version, Transporter 6.1, which will be available later this year and will include an all-electric model.

7: Citroen Berlingo: 592 sold

The Berlingo and its all-new triplets, the Peugeot Partner and Vauxhall Combo, have already won both this year’s International Van of the Year award and What Van?’s light commercial vehicle of the year title. Packed with technology and safety features, including an overload warning sensor, the trio is great to drive and hard-working too.

6: Vauxhall Combo Cargo: 606 sold

An excellent small van capable of carrying a payload up to 1,020kg, the Combo is efficient, comfortable, and well equipped with technology.

5: Vauxhall Vivaro: 617 sold

The only van still built in Britain, the Vivaro will undergo a complete revamp this year – so you should be able to look forward to some great deals on the outgoing model, both new and used.

4: Ford Transit Connect: 777 sold

A spacious cab, low running costs, including excellent fuel economy, and a great driving experience are just a few of the qualities that make the Connect a consistently popular small van. A facelift in 2018gave it a new look inside and out, engineering upgrades, and a new, more efficient 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel engine. It remains one of the best vans in 2019.

3: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: 1,204 sold

Lauded for its cutting-edge technology and connectivity, the Sprinter is an excellent large van: great to drive, with excellent safety features and a fantastic reputation for reliability. In 2018 a front-wheel-drive version became available, which increases payload capacity by about 50kg.

2: Ford Transit: 1,218 sold

Consistently the UK’s favourite large van, the Transit is enjoyable to drive, versatile, reliable, and of great value. A significantly updated version goes on sale later this year, with new engines, an increased payload, more storage space, and mild hybrid technology available for the first time.

1: Ford Transit Custom: 2,023 sold

The UK's bestselling van since it was launched, and in fact, the third bestselling vehicle overall in the UK in 2018, the Ford Transit Custom deserves this top spot. It can carry a payload of up to 8.3 cubic metres, is smooth and refined on the road, and its 2018 facelift made it more practical than ever. It remains one of the best vans to buy in 2019.
